Greenland Heliskiing

We’ve just finished another outrageous season of heliskiing in west Greenland. Yikes! What a trip. The skiing here is just so outstanding, that after 13 years, I understand now that it’s an addiction. Obviously, having a heli at our disposal adds a lot to the experience, but while I’m floating through the powder towards the water’s edge, my sense of touch, directing my attention to my skis, is so distracted by my sense of sight to the water and islands below, that skiing here adds another whole new dimension to the experience. It’s a privilege to spend this time in this little village of Kangaamiut, getting to know these people and skiing down some of the most memorable runs of my winter. And a privilege it is, to ski with my clients, who every year, reflect what I see and feel about this place: the best skiing in the world. Come join us next year: April 18-24, April 25- May 1, and May 2-8, 2016.

Here are a few shots of our runs and time in Kangaamiut.

3 Weeks of Greenlandic Polar Powder

We have just finished our second week of heliskiing in Kangaamiut, Greenland. Conditions are so fine. Over 3 meters of snow is covering these glaciers, giving rise to new and outstanding first descents. The weather has been just right, with cold fresh snow and 5 out of 7 days blue bird last week and 5 out of 6 this week. Our clients who have made their way to our little operation on Kangaamiut, have found life in Kangaamiut super rewarding, spending precious time with locals to really feel like they’ve been in Greenland. The skiing in the Fjords surrounding Kangaamiut is certainly some of the best in the world, from long cruisers to steep faces and couloirs splitting the granite spires surrounding us. Here are a few quick shots of the past few days, through a super slow and sporadic internet connection.

Greenland Heliskiing

It’s that time again. With so much fun skiing, and little time to blog, here’s a quick note from Geneva airport to say that skiing in the alps is still super fine, especially on the south side where there’s still lots of snow.

I’m off for three weeks to Greenlandic polar powder and corn. I hope to update a wee bit from there. It’s snowing there now and I’m so looking forward to being in Kangaamiut again.

Happy trails!!!

What a Winter

So much skiing and so little time to write about it. What a winter it’s been so far. The people I have been skiing with have been so open to so much adventure in such amazing and changing conditions. Chris was so stoked to ski glacial powder in -17C. Alex and I got back up Mount Lollitop for a big day out. Bobby and I were psyched to ski some of the fine couloirs in the Val d’Anniviers, untracked, 2 weeks after the last snow storm. And that’s straight off the lift! With Franco and his boys, I felt like I was back in Hawaii, riding the huge wave of Combe d’Orny on my snowboard. What amazing g-forces felt, arcing turns through deep, untracked powder, from the top of the Trient Glacier to the forest trails below Champex Lac. It was awesome watching the Hartley’s kids tear down a 45 degree Arpette couloir in the morning, then follow me, perfectly, one at a time, at the right time, down another wild couloir into the Val Ferret, with chamois and deer bouncing along the sheer cliff we hugged. And with friends, wonderful Fi, and Steve and Cherries, and Marie-Lou. So fine, so fine, you all. Thank you!!!

Winter started will a Big Bang, got hot, snowed again, dried up, snowed again then got glacial. It’s just turned mild and is forecasted to snow again. The Vermont Boyz are arriving and will certainly be missing our minus 17’Cs from last week. But with a little dump tonight, they could enjoy deep powder without too much skinning.

Here’s some photos with some stories…
