Happy New Year!

This clear weather will give way to some snow Sunday and Monday.

The quantity of snow varies from valley to valley. But there is one constant layer to them. Right on the ground, is a fragile layer, flush with angular crystals. This is the October-November snows we had, which underwent constructive metamorphism during the clear weather of December. What fine weather that was! The whumping we get, as we cross open areas, is that layer collapsing under our weight. The new snow (50cm 10 days ago and 20cm 2 days ago) is starting to act as a bridge over that troubled layer. It now takes 4 big dudes to get a whump, where a little boy got it 5 days ago. Hmmmm...

The skiing has been great! Opening day across the valley was so fine! The runs to the valley floor are hot! Powder on grassy terrain is de rigueur (2 photos ).

The forecast calls for some snow Sunday-Monday. Then clear weather should return. The avalanche danger has gone down for ares with more snow, just west of here, but will go back up if we get snow. It remains at 3 for this valley and east.
